Believe it or not?

Technological advancement in today's world has brought us to social media and relying on it for many things like connecting with family and friends, being invited to events, and catching up on the latest news stories. One of the biggest things as consumers we need to look for now is the news that is being shared with us and whether it is factual or fiction. With technology at our fingertips and society becoming a part of the news stories, it is sometimes difficult to figure out what is the real news and what is the fake news. What are we supposed to believe that is being shared?

"As more ways of interacting with and consuming information emerge, more opportunities are created to present it in a different context and display altogether new viewpoints. In isolation, these new voices and inaccurate viewpoints might not reach many people, however, in a digital environment where content can be shared quickly and easily, misinformative articles can rapidly find their way to the screens of many users" (O'Brien, 2020). Facebook and Instagram have been doing their best to try and filter out the fake news but sometimes it is hard to stop it all.

We are trying to teach technology to spot fake news so that it is not spread among users. "Approximately half of the news is either fake or true within each data set and is labeled accordingly. By knowing these distinctions, Ning and a Ph.D. student can compare the vocabulary, frequency, and distribution of words within each set of content and identify relationships between the entities—such as a particular politician or celebrity—that appear in the content" (Stevens Institute of Technology, 2022).
